Which Is A Better Choice - Authority Sites Or Minisites?
The continuing question regarding authority sites or mini sites may be diminishing in relevance in certain marketing circles. Search engines understandably want to provide solid and good content to the people who represent their customer base. (Even though Google's massive profits are mainly derived by pay per click advertising.) With that said, we do realize that an online marketer will choose the model they think will be in their best interests. We would not suggest, or recommend, that anybody base their entire business model on mini sites alone. On the other hand, promoting an authority website, or blog, will give the owner more freedoms and flexibility. It is just that the minisite requires one to be a little more creative with their promotional efforts.
Many marketers prefer to work within a tightly focused segment of the market known as a niche. For some marketers, this is the perfect choice. This thin slice of the market is known in some circles as a micro-niche. In that case then an authority site may not work as well as a mini site. With the latter, you can target just one or two main keyword phrases very easily and often rank very well in a short time. You'll have to assume that the keyword competition isn't too crowded for this to be effective. In all honesty, you can also target micro-niches inside authority sites too. If this isn't appealing to you though a mini site remains a solid choice.
If you want to please Google, you have to stay current with its latest algorithms, the formulas it uses to rank sites based on quality and other factors. Mini sites, or sites without much content, are definitely going down in popularity with Google, which, in 2010, has been favoring authority sites. Just as Adwords users have to pay more per click if their site is given a low quality score, if you want to rank, you'll have a harder time if your site is labeled thin or not valuable. In other words, it will take more work now to rank well with a mini site or effectively optimize it. The SEO you did would not get you the same results it would have gotten you before this year. We can't change how Google ranks sites, so we have to live with it.
An authority website gives you the opportunity for greater credibility at a faster rate. Larger sites filled with useful content tend to be more impressive to visitors. It's just easier to make the leap that the person behind the larger site really knows what he or she is talking about. Credibility is often established on nothing more than that. This would be a rare exception to the rule for mini sites. That doesn't mean it never happens only that it happens rarely.
We really can't give you any definitive answer about whether authority sites or mini sites are best. Since they are not designed for the same reasons, a direct comparison isn't really helpful. While you can find certain similarities, these don't compare to the fundamental differences.
Rather than ask which is better, ask yourself which makes more sense for you. It all depends on what you're more comfortable with, as you're the one who has to build and maintain the site. Authority sites can help you build a sustainable business, but mini sites can be good if you have a specific product to promote.
